The catalyst may be the Superhero Walk, but it’s about once a year uniting a special community and with the help of many, significantly changing the lives of a few.

So far we’ve raised a whopping $8,549 for Bear Cottage! This morning I thought I was lost to the bleak industrial areas of Port Kembla, a lone superhero who had run out of water and had no mobile coverage. But I’m here, I’ve actually made it! I triumphantly raise my He-Man sword to the sky which is met with rousing cheers and applause. Just one more hill.

I’m met by the KidzWish fairy, Spiderman, a Superman wrestler, Batgirl and a host of others, it’s an incredible turn out. I’m yet to understand the context of that thank you, but soon I will, and it will make every step worth it.

The amazing folks from KidzWish take me aside and introduce me to the little girl, Kiara. She’s shy, tentative, and unsure what a bloke dressed in a silly wig with fake muscles and a sword is all about. Kiara hands me a letter which has her smiling picture at the top and as I scan the words, her lifetime of operations and struggle jump off the page. I can’t read it here with everything going on, I want to take the time to sit quietly and consider every word. Her letter explains that funds raised from the Superhero Walk will go to buying her a C-Pap machine. I have no idea what that is but looking at this brave little girl in front of me, I know it means a great deal to her.

I meet her mum who explains Kiara sometimes stops breathing during the night. Her mum has to wake her up, get her going again. I can’t imagine how long they have existed like this? The C-Pap machine means they can both finally sleep through a whole night.

This letter means everything to me. This moment, this piece in time is what makes it all worthwhile. Her mum tears up and so do I and pretty soon we’re both a bit of a mess. I’m immensely proud, the donations from the Superhero Walk have made a significant difference to Kiara and her family’s life.

Then I meet Nicola who is also shy and unsure what the fuss is about. She’s had her share of troubles and faced them with a smiling determination. Some of Nicola’s movements are challenged and her mum explains how funds raised from the Superhero Walk will buy Nicola orthotics. She’ll be able to run and play with other kids. Simple things that to Nicola, make all the difference.

I smash a tray of Tim Tams and then another. I’m pretty sure they’re for the kids but the sugar has me. I eye up the lamingtons and look out over kids dressed as superheroes, laughing and chasing each other in the safety of the wonderful KidzWish home.

There’s one more person the Superhero Walk has supported and you’ve met him before. Jacob White. But there lingered a knowing, a creeping understanding that in a few short years, their lives would mature. Mortgages, families, “real” jobs; the simple times we’re coming to an end. So they wrote themselves “The Contract”. Mortgages, families, “real” jobs; the simple times we’re coming to an end.

So they wrote themselves “The Contract”.

The Contract is a tenuous anchor to their adventurous 20’s. Put simply, it asked them to travel 2000km’s across a country they had never visited without the use of motorised transport. It was moderately ambitious but fierce on rhetoric;

"I dare to break free. Let me smash these incarcerating chains that bind me to this multi phobic risk minimisation society” they bleated, like they were caught in 1930’s Siberia.

DONATE

Fast forward 15 years and the contract remains unsigned. They met their gorgeous partners, built responsible safe careers, signed mortgages and became dotting fathers who quickly and happily settled into suburbia.

But there’s a niggle, a look to the horizon on those brief respites when they’re not treading on Lego or unpacking the dishwasher. It’s not regret, they wouldn’t change a thing. But if they could have more, would it be the contract?

So I wrote to them;

“Let me ask you fellas, when was the last time anyone wrote to you with such a ridiculous proposition? I bet all your e-mails this morning were about bla bla blab bla who cares. But when was the last time someone offered you a taste of adventure?”

The proposition was simple; dress as a superhero and walk the length of the Royal National Park with me.

It’s safe to say we are not at the peak of our fitness. We’re softer, rounder and happy wearing a dad’s full length rashie at the beach “because of the sun”.

So the idea of walking 26km’s across a hostile land dressed as superheroes is not something to be considered lightly.

But within an hour, the superheroes we’re in.

There’s been talk about gear and plans but as one member put it “all you need is a 600ml empty coke bottle filled with water, a few muesli bars, Dunlop Volleys and swimmers for a lunch time dip”. What could possibly go wrong?

DONATE

And so it is next Friday (23rd September), these four great mates will walk from Bundeena to Otford dressed as superheroes. It’ll be a tough, long, hard day but they know they won’t quit. Because by joining the Superhero Walk, they are helping to raise $10,000 for sick, disadvantaged and disabled kids in the Illawarra.

You’ll meet these superheroes next week but until then, let me ask you;

How much would you pay to see these four superheroes walk the length of the Royal National Park?

Donateto the Superhero Walk today to change a child’s life forever.

superherowalk.com.au

#superherowalk

I’m no Bear Grylls

It’s 5.30am on a Sunday morning and I’m standing in my backyard dressed as Superman. I’m hoping to have the neighbourhood to myself before the locals emerge looking puzzled; why is that bloke dressed as Superman? That’s odd.

And it is odd. But I’ve made a commitment and as I’m quickly finding out, sometimes making the decision to do something is much easier than actually doing it.

A few years ago I was trying to shed my middle aged tummy tire (or at least keep it from spreading to the rest of my body), when I realised I’ve always wanted to do a long walk and raise money for sick kids. But there’s nothing interesting about a cookie cutter stroll (I’m no Bear Grylls) and I realised if I was going to make an impact, I had to step it up.

So I created the Superhero Walk and last year walked from Narrandera to Wagga Wagga dressed in unforgiving superhero lycra costumes (how do they make it look so good?) and raised over $3,000 for sick kids in the Riverina. This year, from 21-25 September, I’ve convinced friends and family to join me and walk from Sydney to Shellharbour (125km’s) and have committed to raising $10,000 for sick, disadvantaged and disabled kids in the Illawarra.

We’re fundraising for KidzWish; that rare type of superhero who for over 20 years have helped thousands of kids in the Illawarra. I was struck by their passion and sheer drive to make a difference. To just get on with it. Because without KidzWish, a whole community of kids wouldn’t have received specialist treatment and support. But there’s more to KidzWish. The clincher was when they told me they had $40,000 in appeals from the local community. Kids who need wheelchairs so they can get to school, kids who can’t afford their medications, everyday people, who through no fault of their own, are up against it.

I puff out my chest (mostly to hide the spare tyre), look to the horizon and stride out my front door. Dressed as Superman. A family appraises me nervously but smile when I hand them a flyer explaining how they can help by donating to the Superhero Walk. Because every single cent goes directly to granting a sick, disadvantaged or disabled child’s special wish.

And it will change their life forever. Please donate today.

superherowalk.com.au

#superherowalk

The Superhero Walk

Helping kids 1 step at a time

Help show kids anything is possible

When Jacob outgrew his wheelchair he had no choice but to put an ad in the local paper asking for help. I’m a mid-40’s, run of the mill office worker, how would we pay the bills?

But I also knew I had it a lot better than most, especially those in country NSW. I’m not particularly fit or ambitious but I do love a walk. So I conceived the Superhero Walk; a fundraiser where everyday people get dressed up as their favourite Superheros and walk to raise money and awareness for kids suffering from life threatening illnesses and situations.

And so it was that I found myself driving to Narrandera in South West NSW with a bag full of unforgiving lycra superhero outfits, hoping to spend five glorious days walking 100km’s to Wagga Wagga. Narrandera, a small and peaceful country town who had no knowledge of my arrival or my intention to walk through their fine streets dressed as the Flash the next morning.

But I couldn’t back out. I was hoping to raise over $3,000 for the local charity Country Hope. Country Hope is an extraordinary organisation who support over 120 families in the Riverina with kids suffering from life threatening illness. They pay their bills, do their housework, provide counselling, stage an extraordinary yearly camp and much much more. They’re salt of the earth people, folks you never hear about until you need them. The real superheros.

The next morning I’m sitting in my campervan dressed as The Flash which leaves nothing, absolutely nothing to the imagination, and not in a good way. I stride proudly into the Caravan Park and past my neighbour who physically recoils at the sight. Not wishing to be misunderstood, I run over to him and thrust a flyer in his face, babbling that I don’t always dress like this, I’m raising money for Country Hope. As I make my getaway, he yells “Oi, you in the red”. Oh no, I’m not even going to make it out of the caravan park. “Good on you mate, bloody great thing you’re doing. Country Hope have helped me and my family. Here ya go”. He hands me $5 and slaps me hard on the back.

For days I meander along a little known country road where farmers wave cautiously at me and every turn is picture perfect. It’s some of the most beautiful country I’ve ever seen. 20km’s a day seemed like a long way but out here it’s a privilege to put one foot after the other. I camp beside bulging rivers filled with thousands of birds competing to be heard and a sense of peace you don’t find in the city. Earlier in the year I had been battling anxiety caused from stress at work. I’d run from meetings and hide in the car park with my feet in the air, breathing heavily into a paper bag. There wasn’t a hint of it out here and as the miles fell away, so did my worries.

My support crew regained their strength and joined me on the road. As we settle into camp, I see a trail of dust approaching from the east. The car stops and he steps out, as I knew he would. Batman. Knowing I was alone, my best mate has driven 6 hours to help. The Superheros are ready.

As we settle in I decide it’s a good idea to move the van away from the fire. I hear Batgirl call out “Don’t go down the pothole”.

“Whatever” I think as I reverse perhaps a little more enthusiastically than required.

“WATCH OUT FOR THE POTHOLE” she screams.

Jeez what’s the big deal, it’s just a little pothole I mutter before BANG! It’s like a bomb has gone off in the back of the van. But what I see baffles me, how can a tree branch be sticking through the back window? And then I realise the pothole is under a tree branch and I’ve impaled the back of the van on a tree.

I’ve somehow smashed the window into microscopic shards of glass which have covered the bed and a good part of the campervan. There’s a hole in the back of the van big enough for a wombat to crawl through and the draft is noticeable and cold. Batgirl is quick to let me know, that’s where I’ll be sleeping for the rest of the trip.

The next morning I look over at Batman who’s dressed in head to toe lycra that may be a tad optimistic. He’s wearing his undies on the outside, tennis shoes and thick soccer socks. He looks like he’s about to give birth to a rabbit.

We turn east and spend the first hour in elated naivety. The fresh air, staring cows, vivid colours towering trees, we are spellbound by it all. An hour into it we take a break and batman pulls out his only rations, a pack of spicy Dorito CC chips and 3 litres of warm water in an old apple juice bottle. He quickly realises he may have misjudged things but doesn’t stop eating, even when tears are streaming from his mask. He drinks more water which only makes it worse and we laugh like we did when we were kids.

We battle the day, a day of straight roads punctuated with locals who pull over for selfies and flies that appear to us city folk to be in plague proportions. Our conversation rambles but never stops and despite the pain, we know this is a great day. The last 5km are the hardest. Batman’s tennis shoes have produced some chunky blisters and he has a bad case of dry mouth. We crawl into the campsite where we lay down on an ants nest and promptly fall asleep.

We bid farewell to Batman and continue our journey eastwards. We could be in outback Australia the road is so black and the soil so red. Locals pull me over and politely enquire as to my sanity before handing me whatever coins they have. I’m given food, water and plenty of advice on the perils of wearing lycra and walking long distances. Many people know Country Hope and everyone understands the importance this self-funded charity makes to the region.

The last day has arrived and I’m thrilled but more surprised we’ve actually done it. I stride proudly through Wagga Wagga’s main street dressed as the Green Lantern, handing out flyers to open mouths and high fiving kids.

I round the final bend into Country Hope’s street and see the wonderful welcome party awaiting me. The Superheros present them with a cheque for $3,085 from a great bunch of supporters we’ve picked up along the way. I’m humbled by their reaction and feel a long way from a run of the mill office worker.

My feet are cut and sore and my body aches but I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat. And in 2016, that’s exactly what we’re going

Over $3,000 raised for Country Hope!

Over 5 days in September 2015, the superhero’s walked from Narrandera to Wagga Wagga NSW raising over $3,000 for Country Hope.
